There are around 200-250 species of heliconia worldwide, of which there are more than 35 native in Costa Rica. Their primary pollinators are hummingbirds, which are attracted to the bright red colors. It’s also interesting that Heliconias only release nectar in small quantities and from only a few flowers, so that the hummingbirds have to visit many flowering plants for cross-pollination.
