Mount Panié holds the world’s only stand of Mount Panié Kauri, a Critically Endangered conifer revered by the Indigenous Kanak people. The Kauri (Agathis montana) can live to be 500 years old and is called “Dayu Biik” in Némi and Fwaî, two local dialects. This translates as “strong and flexible Kauri” in reference to its ability to withstand strong winds. The tree is considered the guardian of Mount Panié by the Kanak.
