Sugarcane is a widely grown crop in the Nile Basin, but its destructive effects have become increasingly apparent. As the thirsty crop draws down water resources, species like the critically endangered Nubian flapshell turtle suffer a loss of habitat, forage and nesting sites. Working with the Turtle Survival Alliance, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Turtle Surveillance and the Rainforest Trust, Behangana says the most promising effort to conserve the turtle is through establishment of community protected areas
